20% off for a Year
Dear Readers,
You know how I hate to ask for money, but of course I must do so every now and again. It has been a big year for my writing career, but only in terms of writing for other people. As it turns out it is true what they say, that it is hard to make a living freelancing. My hope here has always been to get up to 1,000 paid subscribers, which never seemed unattainable, but now for an entire year I have been stuck around 50, which is depressing. I know that my output on Substack has not been great, which is partially due to my 1 year old being very needy but also due to not putting as much time into it due to other writing responsibilities. You may have seen that this year alone I have been published in the New York Post, the American Conservative, the Washington Examiner, and Commonplace Magazine. I guess I am a real writer now! Funny enough someone on Twitter tried to mock me as a failure lacking self-confident because my bio includes the line “arguably a journalist,” which is of course a joke about the negative connotation of that term.
While my output here has left much to be desired, this remains the best way to support me overall, at least until I am big enough for Twitter subscriptions. It should be thought of as not just my articles and podcasts here, but all of my twitter output, my having the free time to go on other people’s shows, and more. However, my income remains dismal and I have a family to support and don’t see myself as able to quit writing and go into any other line of productive work- the truth is I had not been accomplishing much for a number of years before I took to writing and had been underemployed since college. This won’t come as a surprise to anyone who has been following my writing, but due to my habits, opinions, and personality, I am largely unemployable as anything but a weirdo on the internet.
I don’t want to take up anymore of your time, so I will just again ask you to consider a paid subscription and also remind you that subscriptions to The Wayward Rabbler make great gifts for friends and family members you hope will stop speaking to you!
One way or another, thank you for reading, and Merry Christmas!
Brad
