Mmmh, this is good piece of tactical analysis, but I still believe that the main strategy is to lure Russia into a trap by occupying large parts of territory of Ucraine. The more territory Russia occupies the more it will have to defend. Not defending to an infantry which would be easy but defending the occupied territories against continuous attacks of missiles fired from far away against the Russians positions. The only way of defense are sophisticated ballistic missile defense systems. And so Russia will have to install hundreds of these systems to defend the occupied territories: Bdm systems which are needed first of all to defend their nuclear missiles sites against a nuclear first strike. So the strategy has been always the same: diverting attention and firepower to launch a surprise nuclear first strike against the Russian nuclear missiles sites.
Its possible, though it seems like they would have set their defensible positions farther back and activating insurgeny cells behind Russian lines if that were the case.
I dont think Russia really minds moving its front line forward and taking part in an artillery war for years.
The problem is that the Russians have to defend the occupied territories, and the larger the territory the bigger the problem. Even if they conquered the entire Ucraine they wouldn't be in a better position because Nato is just looking forward to enter the war and bombarding the Russian positions from all Nato countries. But yeah they would be unwise to occupy majority ethnic Ukrainian areas.
Why....they can use battlefield nuclear weapons. Perhaps not "likely" but how lucky do you feel?
