Just a few personal observations on why the Ds are over-performed. Despite all the bad economic data, the job market is still hot. Even if you get laid off, there are plenty of companies still hiring.

The second thing I believe is what might be called “Trump exhaustion”; in my district – CA 49 – every republican running was labeled as “Trump republican” in every attack ad. Just as people were getting tired of the Clintons, I think we are getting to the same stage with Trump.

If you don’t mind me being an ad-hoc editor, I fixed your following sentence:

“Even if none of this is taken as evidence of wrongdoing, the people who run our (elections) government are doing a really bad job.”

It might be part of the general crapification trend of a declining empire. If I may suggest a perspective on how ancient Romans viewed their empire crumbling around them, - or if they even noticed it - which did take a few centuries, almost as much time as the US is around.

It is a very weird bad economy where there are more jobs than willing workers, but prices are crazy.

And while the whole government is terrible, plenty of bad governments run better elections than these.

I also think its extremely clear the public is done with Trump.

The Sallust quote I used is part of some of the most famous commentary on the corruption of the era where they transitioned from Republic to Empire [of course the Republic had a massive empire.] My copy of Appian has a note about how he was writing at a time when the Roman Empire had entered its final long term economic decline, but its not clear to what extent anyone realized that.
