Can we credibly believe that Hetfield was referring to U2 and not Macklemore? U2's own "bullshit" is ancient... what would prompt Metallica to reference them now?
If Hetfield wasn't sticking it to Macklemore, that puts this episode in a whole new light.
I don't know, I very much assumed it was Macklemore. U2 did previously do a residency at The Sphere where this happened and it was seemingly highly on Ulrich's mind when they started playing there, and U2 was also working towards announcing a concert, but I really think it was just a reference to Macklemore, or perhaps to nothing specific at all.
Well, if it wasn't a dig at Macklemore, then the Twitter response was overblown. But if it was then I think Hetfield had it coming since he was aligning himself with the enemies of art (i.e. censorious billionaire swine).
