Haiti was founded as a safe haven mostly for black slaves but also for any and all of the oppressed and enslaved "brown" people of the global south. They were able to fend of attacks by the white imperialist/ colonizers for a while so the white imperialist colonizers vowed that Haiti would never be left alone to know peace and prosperity...they never have and most likely never will.
Indeed and the French charhed them like 100 billion dollars for their own freedom on threat of invasion while the US didnt recognize them and hindered their trade for 60 years then charged them a massive indemnity for the US occupation about when they stopped paying off the French.
