The calculus has always been pretty simple. They’ve destroyed a critical mass of infrastructure, and can prevent importation of the materials necessary to rebuild it. Which is exactly what they will do.

What Israel is doing in Gaza (absolutely horrible) reminded me of a dialogue Theodore Dalrymple had as a psychiatrist with a convict who had killed his girlfriend. He says: Doctor, I had to strangled her, otherwise I don't know what I would have done! And TD's sarcastic comment is: he would have done something serious, probably.

I think that’s a very accurate representation of Israel in that they are acting like a sociopath. Of course, unlike other sociopaths, once caught, they are given license to continue by virtue of their ethnic connections within western liberal governments and media

Israel is literally killing a whole population without defenses. They will do this to Syria, Libya, Iraq, and eventually Iran if given the opportunity. Gaza is just a trial run for these people.

It is also instructive to compare the attitude of the West to Usrael with that towards Russua in Ukraine. It's like Ukrainians are screaming all the time "Russia attacked us with 250 drones and 20 missiles, 2 people died, 15 were wounded, oh the HORROR!!" Contrast with Israel in Gaza ...

yeah, in fact, the Ukraine War is a great example of the fact that civilian casualties are inevitable in warfare but that they can be minimized, which Israel is not doing at all
