$38K to remove one sea lion?

The government can't do anything right.

yeah and again this doesn’t even require a government program you could just issue hunting licenses, though letting the tribes do it is certainly more palatable to the public and they indeed have the argument that salmon are a treaty protected right.

Letting the tribes do it is genius, because nobody wants to rein in the tribes. Heck, they could just announce a bounty of a certain amount of money per carcass, and regular people could take care of the problem. Sea lions are cute, but good grief! There’s a limit. Sometimes, excess populations of animals have to be dealt with in an intelligent manner. The $38K ketamine/scientific research plan is retarded, but typical of the government.

yeah her legislation allow them to contract it as well

Awesome stuff, in that it is a chronicle of the bizarre. Which is really the story of PNW salmon conservation. You can't make this stuff up.

yes it’s a tragicomic theater of the absurd

Great reporting, Brad. Your restraint in not naming the pub that stiffed you is admirable.

So many threads come together here.

The surreal attempts to "humanely" eliminate "problem" sea lions is exactly the kind of policy urban wokesters vote for after a microsecond of thought. (Here in Colorado they voted for wolf reintroduction a few years ago in a ballot initiative. Now the wolves are predating on livestock and Denver progressives are decrying lethal control measures and CPW is ending compensation to ranchers. Result: a growing Shoot, Shovel, Shut up movement on the Western Slope.)

As you note, Native people are integral to those lands. (Just ask them, they'll tell you.) As the apex predator they have shaped the Holocene evolution of those varied landscapes. I think that you're right, only a couple of seasons would return the Columbia system to something resembling equilibrium. An occasional sea lion would be a welcome addition to the table and relieve the pressure on the fish. Of course, in the city they like to quote Chief Seattle, but actual, real life is too icky to countenance. (I remember the freak out when the Makah reinstituted the whale hunt for their young men. City hippies calling Indians "apples" for not getting in line.)

How refreshing to see a reasonable Democrat. Thank you for introducing us to Marie Gluesenkamp Perez! I pray that she is a harbinger of a shift to pragmatic representation of her District - just like the founding fathers envisioned.

Yeah her district was actually drawn to be solid R in 2010 but the state has moved D, so the swing district is D and an R district is a swing district (I interviewed my Congressman before he took office, who was on the committee that drew the districts in the state senate and he explained this at in some detail.) They actually avoided attacking her on the procedural vote on the grounds it would help her and encourage her independence, she’s in a district where the national party attacking her will get her more voters, not fewer.

Regarding the publication, they didn’t technically stiff me because it was on spec, so they objectively don’t owe me any money, nevertheless, it is all quite unprofessional and very annoying, and I feel bad as I got a Congresswoman to take time out of her schedule for an interview on the grounds it would be in a publication people actually read.

I hope they get their heads out of their nethers and publish it. It was an excellent read.

well, it’s certainly not getting published now, as it has already been published elsewhere, unless they decide they feel bad, I guess. It’s mostly just annoying because I think if I would have withdrawn it two weeks ago I could have sold this elsewhere.
