You say the courts are undemocratic, and they supposed to be, patrician plebian Machiavelli and all. In theory they should by virtue of the constitution protect from the tyranny of the majority, now courts are imposing in many places a tyranny of the minority. An unelected unnaccountable self selecting judiciary really is a problem and what I found about the controversy in Israel when it raged as you point out though not explicitly. Israeli liberals could have sought a compromise and demanded the drafting of a constitution (one that presumably would need to also guarantee eqaul rights for all), which by demography in the future could conceivably mean a coalition led by Arab Israelis which I doubt even secular liberal Israelis would be comfortable with, which is presumably why those voices never really got much say. If you going to have an unelected self selecting unnacountable court and its going to rule on the legality of legislation passsed by elected and accountable politicans, it needs to have either written or unwritten a set of principles. I didn't have much sympathy for the Israeli liberal side at the time because I wasn't reading enough liberal commentary demanding what should have been an obvious compromise.

Yes as I make clear, a real problem has been identified that needs to be dealt with, not letting them overturn laws takes it to far, but having a self-selecting court completely removed from the political process is also absolutely ridiculous.

There are clear reasons no one wanted to compromise though, as the court gives a liberal elite power completely out of proportion to its part of the population, whereas the electorate gets ever more right wing due to multiple factors including much higher birth rates among religious Jews.

A better selection process and clearer guidelines for it to base rulings upon would be the best thing for a stable state with a degree of protection for all members.

I wonder how this might play into Biden's response. https://www.thenation.com/article/world/trump-israel-collusion/

I mean it is infinitely more plausible than anything about Russiagate. But also the kind of thing Biden would likely to be able to uncover and not be able to admit openly. So if he see's the opportunity to stick the knife in Bibi.....

(with the caveat that obviously Israel did the hacking rather than snooped on Russia doing it.)

Yeah I mean Israel is pretty enmeshed in American politics generally

This "law of conquest" sounds like a great way to endorse genocide/ethnic cleansing etc.

I wouldn't stand by/with/ or anywhere near it.
