Good piece but I think you could argue France was similar to Portugal in the way it fought for its empire at least in Algeria

I spoke to someone I know well who recently spent time in Bissau for work, and they are skeptical of the cartel narrative. The cartels have other routes into Europe (e.g. Antwerp, Marseille ports), and with all the unwanted attention their presence in Bissau has garnered, it’s possible they have moved on by now. This person doesn't have a good explanation for Embalo's actions either, however.

> For reasons that are still not clear, Embalo soon left for Congo-Brazzaville.

This person says Senegal kicked Embalo out, because they like to present themselves as a stronghold of democracy in the region (compared to their neighbors at least), and Embalo’s presence tarnished that image.
